UGM Guest blog: My Story of the Week – By Caroline Hargreaves

UGM Guest blog: My Story of the Week – By Caroline Hargreaves

Caroline joined us for the event as she loves to combine running with travelling. She took on the full marathon event, visited a Ugandan project which works to fight malnutrition in schools, donated a ton of running shoes to the Masaka running community, and after the week, went Gorilla trekking in the Rain Forest. Describing the race as “hands down my favourite marathon” and 7-days as “one of the best weeks of my life“, she returned from the adventure so inspired, she started writing her own blog about her travels and running. Below she kindly shares some extracts from her write up of the week, both from her blog and the race report she wrote for her running club, to give you an idea of what the Uganda Marathon event is all about!    Sunday 27th May: Arriving in Uganda After [the collection from the airport, it was] a quick stop at the equator & an African massage (that’s driving on the African roads full of potholes)  we arrived at Hotel Brovad, my home for the next week. Time to freshen up & change, ready to go to the welcome party held at the Athletes Village where there was food, a bar where you could buy alcohol from whilst sitting around the campfire, and the chance to watch traditional African dancers.   Monday 28th May: Acclimatisation Day Up early & met up with everyone to learn more about what the Uganda Marathon is all about & got to play some games to get to know each other a bit better. We then got placed into clans with people that have...
Interview with a UGM Runner – Ryan Langridge

Interview with a UGM Runner – Ryan Langridge

Here, we interview runners who have participated in the Uganda Marathon, so they can share their stories and experiences from the 7-Day Adventure. After all, it’s their involvement which makes the week so special, from the impact they have on the projects, to community feel they give to the race. Ryan, a careworker from the UK, joined us in Uganda to run his first ever marathon! Below he tells us about his experience of Race Day,  what it was like to run the final 500 meters(!), and how he tied in his choice of project & fundraising with his career!     1. What made you sign up for the Uganda Marathon, and was it what you expected? I signed up for the Uganda Marathon because I had never run a marathon before and sort of wanted to prove to myself that I could run the full distance. The race itself is far from what I expected (my fault guys, shouldn’t underestimate those hills!) I expected the course to be far different from the reality, including weather on the day etc. The week itself was great fun and exactly what I expected from you guys [the team] so thank you!   2. What project did you choose to fundraise for and why? What was your experience with them in Uganda? I chose to fundraise for STEP. I chose this project based on my job as a care worker at home and thought it may be a good idea to see how elderly people live in a lesser developed area of the world. I had a great experience with STEP and...
Extend your 7-Day Adventure: Gorillas & Safari Tours

Extend your 7-Day Adventure: Gorillas & Safari Tours

The 7-Day Adventure involves a wide number of activities – volunteering at two Charity Projects, organising a sports day for local disadvantaged children, connecting with the local community, enjoying a festival atmosphere at Athletes’ Village, running an incredible race, and more. But if you don’t feel the seven days is quite enough, and you’d like to explore more of what the beautiful country of Uganda has to offer, we’ve prepared three special tour packages for our runners. You can do these either before or after the main week. Make the most of your time in the Uganda and see more of what this magical place has to offer, and turn an amazing week into the holiday of a lifetime!   Gorilla Trekking This tour takes places over 3 days and 2 nights, giving you the chance to see a family of gorillas in the wild. You’ll trek through the rainforest in Bwindi to locate our closet relatives, a special experience in itself as you explore one of Uganda’s most stunning locations. Then, come face-to-face with a band of gorillas – including infants, mothers and even the mighty silverback!   Runner’s Story – read Helen’s experience of the Gorilla Trekking after the 7-Day Adventure, where she realised a ‘lifelong dream’. This extension was a big reason for her signing up for the main event.   Gorilla Trekking & Safari Spanning 5 days and 4 nights, this tour includes everything mentioned in the Gorilla Trekking above, plus exploring one Uganda’s most famous tourist attractions – Queen Elizabeth National Park. Located in the Savannah Plains between the Ruwenzori Mountains, it is the...
Interview with a UGM Runner – Amy Broadhead

Interview with a UGM Runner – Amy Broadhead

Here, we interview runners who have participated in the Uganda Marathon, so they can share their stories and experiences from the 7-Day Adventure. After all, it’s their involvement which makes the week so special, from the impact they have on the projects, to community feel they give to the race. Amy, from Barnsley, was seeking an opportunity to do some volunteering for charity but didn’t consider herself well travelled. However, she decided to take the plunge! She fundraised for Bugabira Primary School, used her time in Uganda to go on Safari and Gorilla Trekking, and despite not considering herself a ‘runner’, on Race Day she stepped up to do the Half-Marathon!     1. What made you sign up for the Uganda Marathon? I signed up for the marathon because my friend Ryan suggested it- he had seen it on the internet and we were trying to find an experience that would suit us both. He loves to run and I’ve always wanted to do charity work, and it combined both of them into one. I was apprehensive at first as I didn’t know what to expect… I hadn’t travelled that far away from home so it was very nerve racking but with the extra push I needed, I decided to sign up. But I’m so glad I decided to go in the end as going to Uganda was the best experience of my life!   2. Which project did you choose to fundraise for? Tell us about why you chose this project and your experience with them in Uganda. I chose to fundraise for Bugabira Primary School and chose this...

Interview with a UGM Runner – Max Haspels

Here, we interview runners who have participated in the Uganda Marathon, so they can share their stories and experiences from the 7-Day Adventure. After all, it’s their involvement which makes the week so special, from the impact they have on the projects, to community feel they give to the race. Max, an experienced marathon runner, joined us from the Netherlands when he was searching for an event outside his own country. He ran the 42K, fundraised for the project ‘Youth with a Vision’ and also extended his time in Uganda to go on a Safari and Gorilla Trekking in the Rainforest!   1. What made you sign up to the Uganda Marathon? I was looking on the internet for a marathon outside of the Netherlands where I live and coincidentally found the Uganda Marathon. When I had a look at their website and discovered that the Uganda Marathon is more than just a marathon, but a full week of meeting new people and getting involved with development projects and local people, I got quite excited. I had never seen such projects from close by and the marathon looked like a great challenge. As they also offered safari extensions and I was still making new holiday plans, it all came together and I signed up.   2. During the week, you stayed at our hotel option. How was it? The hotel was good and there were quite a few runners staying there. The room was comfy and the staff were very friendly. The pool is a good place to cool down from the African sun and I even hit the gym a...
