TGG_Icon_Color_11It’s estimated that one in five children in Uganda is uneducated, with the worst numbers in rural and semi-rural places like Masaka where free education is few and far between. Rhinah started in 2008 as a Kindergarten and it has quickly grown to have 102 children who study there up to the end of Primary 7. What makes them stand out is that they ensure that 4 out of every 10 students are sponsored by the school to attend for free or for a contribution in kind. With your support, Rhinah Kindergarten and Primary School are keen to grow by building better classrooms that will not only offer a better education but will also attract more paying pupils so that they can increase the number of vulnerable children that they offer free education to.

Goal 1: To add a further 14 pupils to the bursery program, supporting a total of 54 vulnerable children by the start of 2021 academic year.

TGG_Icon_Color_11This women’s group has developed from a small group of women who saw a growing amount of youth crime within their community and decided to act. They identified the issue as a high volume of households where domestic abuse was common. This lead to the wives giving birth to many children who grew up in poor environments and were driven to theft and drugs. The women formed Elyon to help create empowered women with options for their children. This group needs your help to sustainably strengthen their savings group and growing their school to attract paying pupils who can help them support vulnerable children with an education.

Goal 1: For 70 children to be sustainably supported through education at Elyon Joy School by the end of 2021

Goal 2: For 10 women to have their own enterprise, earning them a liveable income by the start of 2021

TGG_Icon_Color_11We all know how important clean water is for any organisation or community, and there are few places that need it more than schools. Bright Angels is a school in Masaka with 360 students but are 3km from the nearest clean water source. Currently, pupils are required to transport 50 jerry cans a day from the tap, which is a major disruption to the school’s syllabus and the children’s education. To make things worse, the water source that they use is not protected and is often subjected to animals who carry infectious diseases. With your support, we want to create clean water sources within the school grounds that can be offered to the nearby community for a small maintenance fee.

Goal 1: To create a year round sustainable water source for 360 pupils and staff at Bright Angels by end of 2020.

Goal 2: To save 600,000 UGX ($163 USD) a month to ensure all water at the school is harvested by the end of 2021.

TGG_Icon_Color_11Discrimination and lack of care for people with disabilities in Uganda is at a heartbreaking level. Unfortunately, due to a severe lack of knowledge or awareness about disability conditions those people with disabilities are very often discriminated against and not given opportunities to succeed at all. Founded in 2016, Smiling Hearts was born out of the director, Helen’s, personal passion for supporting the disabled community. Having seen how great the need is for self-sufficiency among children with disabilities, she established a training centre for disabled youths that teaches sewing, tailoring and art. It is run free of charge with the sustainability in part coming from sales of the items produced. With your support, we want to grow these vocational classes by purchasing necessary equipment, as well as providing an income that will be used to transport children who are unable to make it to the centre.

Goal 1: To provide vocational skills for 40 more disabled individuals through the centre by the end of 2020

Goal 2: To provide income for the project to sustainably support the basic care for 11 disabled boarding students by end of 2021.

Uganda is approaching a severe youth crisis. With spiraling levels of youth unemployment and a fast growing young population, creating jobs for the youth of Uganda is a top priority.  Masaka Youth Development is tackling this problem by supporting youths to start up their own small businesses. They offer start-up loans that are specifically designed to help them succeed. Their model is designed not to make money, but to help youth entrepreneurs become job creators not job seekers. With your support, Masaka Youth Development Assocation want to offer more youths a start-up loan to help them get on their feet.

Goal 1:To add 20 new members to their loan and savings group by the end of 2020
Goal 2: To have established 20 new youth led businesses that are actively paying back their loans by the end of 2021

TGG_Icon_Color_11Public infrastructure and services in rural areas of developing countries are unfortunately rarely sufficient to meet the needs of the population, and you don’t get much more rural in Uganda than the Sesse Islands. Eunice Medical Centre was newly established by Dr James Suubi after his wife was forced to give birth in their home without medical support nearby. The incredible couple combined their savings and established Eunice Medical Centre, and now people travel from all across the 64 habitable islands for medical checkups and advice. Now, the service needs your support to significantly reduce extremely high electricity bills as well as expanding it’s medical service to support the needs of the community.

Goal 1: For Eunice to be energy self-reliant by the end of 2020, saving the medical centre 3,000,000 UGX ($811 USD) a year in electricity bills
Goal 2: For Eunice to provide effective medical care to over 6,000 patients by the end of 2021

Primary education in Uganda is supposed to be free, However it is badly underfunded by the government. In reality, only a small fraction of the actual costs of educating, catering and staffing the pupils is being covered, which means that support for the children’s education is poor. In most cases, education is supplemented by school fees and parents & teachers contributions, although in poorer areas it just causes very high numbers of dropouts at a Primary level. Support Organisation for Community Development was founded in 2014 as a community support group that focuses on education, agriculture, water & sanitation, HIV & AIDS and Child Protection. They need your support to sustainably contribute scholastic materials to the community schools each year, which will free up budget to support the children better and reduce the likelihood of them dropping out.

TGG_Icon_Color_11Primary school education is free in Uganda, however the reality is that there is not nearly enough funding to support this. Recent figures suggest that government spending only covers about 1% of the average school fee’s per student, which means that the schools are forced to set school fees or the community must pick up the slack. Primer Junior School is based in one of the many sub-parishes that surround Masaka called Kijjabwemi. It caters for families who often struggle to find money for school fee’s, living pay check to pay check or off small hold farm areas. Of the 155 pupils who attend the school, 60 pupils are fully supported with school fee’s. They now need your support to increase the number of paying pupils at the school, which will provide the income to help them increase their scholarship to 96 pupils.

Goal 1: Double the school’s current boarding capacity by the end of 2020

Goal 2: 96 students sponsored through the school’s own sustainability model by the end of 2021

In the area that House of Love and Hope work in, 7 out of 10 women who leave school are semi-literate. These women often become housewives and unemployed mothers who are at high risk of domestic violence due to prevailing poverty in their homes. House of Love and Hope is an organisation that combats a wide variety of issues felt by women and girls, they work to empower the women to be independent and earn money that will cater for their own and their children’s basic needs. In previous years, The Uganda Marathon has been supporting 25 women with an events businenss that earns them an income. This business is now quickly growing and they need your support to expand their offering and their clients so that they can support 65 women who are stuck in abusive marriages.

Goal 1: 65 women by the end of 2021 to be earning a liveable wage through the events business

Goal 2: Triple the earnings of the group by allowing them to take on larger clietns by the end of 2020

TGG_Icon_Color_11Uganda is currently experiencing one of the biggest youth crisis ever seen. With 77% of the population under 30 and 83% unemployment, significant numbers of young Ugandan’s are being pushed into gangs, prostitution and theft. In order to reduce this problem, the creation of sustainable youth jobs is a top priority. Classic Outfitters is an incredible program that is working to offer tailoring skills to youths in Masaka that will allow them to apply for jobs or start their own businesses. Previous Uganda Marathon runners have supported this group by buying machinery to teach youths and make products to sell and support the project. This has proven very successful and now the group need your support to complete a purpose built classroom and see 175 new students graduate from the program, which will be fully sustainable thanks to the products being sold.

Goal 1: To have built a purpose classroom block for 175 students by the end of 2020

Goal 2: To see 175 new students graduate from Classic Outfitters with gainful empolyment options by the end of 2021

Goal 3: To increase the training centre’s monthly income by 2,000,000 UGX ($541 USD) by the end of 2021

With a goal to serving anyone between 1-30 years of age, YWAV have set themselves the challenge of reaching out to nearly 75% of the population of Masaka Region. They target unemployed, orphaned, disabled and illiterate individuals, the majority of whom depend on less than 75p a day. This tiny amount clearly doesn’t allow for schooling costs and traps people into a cycle of poverty that is nearly impossible to escape. With the support of previous Uganda Marathon runners, YWAV established a finance scheme designed specifically around the needs for underprivalaged youth. It worked by providing support around loans for youths that saw them enter an internship scheme with a relevant business, be assigned a mentor, and open a bank account. This year, with your support, we want to extend this scheme to an additional 20 more youths a year, who can benefit and become job creators rather than job seekers.

This is particularly bad in rural areas where there are heartbreaking levels of school drop outs at primary level. The Bugabira School is a rural community-run school that offers heavily subsidised fees, providing quality education for 400 disadvantaged children. Previous Uganda Marathon runners have supported this school in a wide number of areas and now they need you to help them tackle their one remaining challenge – feeding the children. They need your help to establish a farm that can provide sustainable food, which will free budget to add more students on their scholarship scheme.

Goal 1: To establish a school farm that can provide sustainable food for 400 pupils by the end of 2020.

Goal 2: To successfully have 104 students on the school scholarship scheme by the end of 2021.

Make Women Smile is a women’s group in Masaka that supports what might be the most vulnerable group of beneficiary groups the Uganda Marathon has ever seen. Women who are currenly serving, or who have previously served, a prison sentance. With a corrupt legal system that is strongly biased towards wealth and is dominated by men. Ugandan women often fall victim to wrong convictions and lengthy jail sentences due to not being able to afford bail, or sadly the necessary bribe to the judge. Make Women Smile take time to speak to these women, both providing vital counselling as well as links to human rights organisation where necessary. They also help to empower the women with skills whilst in prison by teaching basic craft trades and supplying them with vital hygiene products. This year, Make Women Smile need your support to create a safe way house to help the women recuperate after being released from prison, learn skills and rehabilitate back safely into society.

Goal 1: To save 670,000 UGX ($181 USD) a month to establish a safe way house for vulnerable women released from prison by the end of 2021

Goal 2: To create two jobs for women ex-prisoners by the end of 2020

TGG_Icon_Color_11In Uganda, HIV/AIDS spread is still a widespread issue, with estimates suggesting that 7% of the overall population are living with this serious condition. However, when you look at fishing villages and areas on the banks of Lake Victoria, such as Masaka, then the rate is significantly higher with estimates ranging anywhere between 15% and 40% of the population living with the condition. CHEDRA has been working in Greater Masaka Region for the past 14 years and is now regarded as one of the best grassroots organisations in Uganda for helping combat the HIV epidemic. Over the years, the organisation have developed the skills, knowledge and experience to provide testing, counselling, treatment and sign posting services to the most HIV high risk communities. Although now they badly need a health clinic that focuses on HIV treatment.

Goal 1: To create a health service for 1,800 people per year to use by the end of 2020.

Goal 2: To see a reduction of 3% in the number of HIV cases in the village of Ssaza by the end of 2021.

Goal 3: To sustainably generate 2,000,0000 UGX ($541 USD) a month by the end of 2021.

You can also choose to support our local Ugandan NGO directly – the “Masaka Marathon NGO”. Our Ugandan team works tirelessly across Masaka, reviewing all of these projects, supporting their development, hosting skills exchanges, training and making sure every penny generated by you, the runner, goes to support people in Uganda.

Edna, Tom, Cissy and Johnson work primarily in and with the local community – identifying local leaders and people in need, and bringing you – the runner – face to face with the people you will help

Whenever a project is overfunded by the amazing efforts of runners’ fundraising, the surplus is split amongst other projects – including the NGO. We are incredibly proud that every penny, pound and dollar donated and raised by you goes directly to Uganda – to support the people of Uganda, giving them a “hand up – not a hand out”.

“Just completed my first half marathon around the Ugandan countryside! Scenery was breathtaking and, despite the most brutal hills I’ve ever run/walked up, the local kids that came out to cheer us on were incredible motivation! Thanks to the Uganda Marathon team for putting on such an amazing week.”
