The Uganda Marathon COVID-19 Response

Dear Friends. It is with great sadness that we have announced that, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic,  we are forced to postpone the 2020 Uganda Marathon week-long Adventure, and the Uganda Marathon Race, until Summer 2021. Prior to the 18th March, our stance was that the event was due to continue as planned, as long as it was safe, participants were able to get to Uganda, and that we had not received instructions to cancel from local or national authorities. However since then, tight controls have been put into place in Uganda that make the safe organisation of this event impossible. These controls include: Changes in the FCO travel advice to advise against all but essential travel to Uganda – https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/uganda. Updates from the Ugandan government Ministry of Health advising against foreign travel to Uganda. The closure of the only international airport in Uganda for all non-essential travel. The closure of roads into the country for all non-essential travel. Strict quarantine instructions for all Ugandan residents returning home that force them to isolate for 14 days on arrival. The banning of all big gatherings The banning of all press conferences. The closure of all schools, universities and churches. It is difficult to predict how long these measures will be enforced for, but after conversations with the local authorities and our sponsors, we realised that we can no longer hold the event this May and so we have no choice but to postpone the 2020 event. We are devastated as a team, but even in this time of sadness, we are touched by the messages of understanding and support...
The Uganda Marathon Project Selection Process

The Uganda Marathon Project Selection Process

The Uganda Marathon is not just an event that happens for one week of the year. It is a year-round charity with a full-time team – working tirelessly with projects and the local community to ensure that every pound and dollar raised through the race supports those in Uganda that need it most. Our mission is to alleviate poverty in rural Uganda. Together, we are helping local community organisations to be self-sufficient through revenue generating, and cost-saving initiatives. What this means is that rather than funding a single school lunch for a child, we fund an income-generating or cost-saving project (like a small farm, or solar power), which will generate/save enough money to pay for a lifetime of school lunches. Every year, we work with local community leaders to identify the projects that would most benefit from your support. There are so many incredible projects in Uganda that work in the community, choosing the final 15 is a monumental task! This is why we have worked to create the fairest, most transparent system for choosing the projects that are supported for each event. We are a registered NGO in Uganda – The Masaka Marathon – and a UK-registered charity – The Uganda Foundation – which means that every pound or dollar you fundraise is accounted for, and our team work tirelessly to make sure you leave the biggest legacy possible. As part of our dedication to being transparent, would like to share our system for choosing the 15 Uganda Marathon partner projects: The Application Process This is your legacy! In order to select the best projects we follow a...

The Official Uganda Marathon - An Adventure Like No Other - 2019 Race Results! All the action from the week The Uganda Marathon is a week long festival 200 participants from all over the world came together in one small town in Uganda. Masaka – the home of The Uganda Marathon. For one week, these legends learn about the hopes, challenges and dreams of the community here. Spending time working with local community projects. Seeing firsthand how their support is changing lives. Getting under the skin of what life is like in Uganda, and becoming part of the family here. Culminating in a Race Like No Other After a week of intense activity – of participants challenging themselves, working hard alongside the community, and an endless supply of dance, music, food and art – it’s time for the race. A tough, but rewarding course. 10k, 21k or 42k of rolling red earth tracks. Across hills and valleys. 5,150 runners – from Uganda and across the world – coming together. To run shoulder to shoulder. Laughing and smiling. This isn’t a race about personal bests. It’s a celebration of community and helping one another. Our last runner crossed the line in 9 hours 30 minutes. And we waited to cheer them across the line. Because The Uganda Marathon isn’t about how fast you can run, it’s about how much you can experience. How many people you can help. Which means that the most important result is this.. The amazing runners and participants in The 2019 Uganda Marathon have raised £164,130!
