A UGM Runner’s Training Diary: Part 4 – By Simon Fox

A UGM Runner’s Training Diary: Part 4 – By Simon Fox

Here, one of our runners, Simon, tells his story of preparing to run the Uganda Marathon 2017. An experienced runner, he writes about his love of running, how the past week has gone and also looks ahead to the 7 Day Adventure – his first time traveling to Africa! This week, we join Simon as he takes a recovery week after participating in the London Marathon…   By Simon Fox Why I run: helping to change lives News stories have the uncomfortable ability to wash over us. 16 million people starving of famine in East Africa, a Syrian chemical attack on innocent children and the ongoing refugee crisis across north Africa. As much as you or I have or haven’t engaged in them, they are happening today, and these situations do have one thing in common; and it’s good news…we can make a positive difference. Through giving of our compassion, generosity and finances. Through our ever increasingly connected world, we are no longer naive to those who are most in need! Running and specifically, marathon running has been utilised by the fundraising world because of its element of challenge. The thought of turning out in your dinosaur outfit at  3 o clock on a Saturday to an 11 a-side football match, having asked friends, family and colleagues for sponsorship is ridiculous, but the idea of running 26 miles dressed up as a T-rex is, well, also ridiculous but for some reason ridiculously embraced! UGM Runners’ Community: April ’17 Wrap Up

UGM Runners’ Community: April ’17 Wrap Up

There are only 26 days to go until the 7-day Adventure! Preparations amongst the team are in full swing, runners are moving towards the finals stages of their training, and fundraising is on the steady increase, as we hope this year’s Uganda Marathon will leave the biggest impact in Masaka yet. As you can imagine, with things really ramping up as we move closer towards the event, we’ve got plenty of community news to share! Social training runs, awards, charity news, competitions and more…here’s what’s been happening in April and March…   Social Training Runs – Regent’s Park & Primrose Hill 10K, and Wimbledon Common Half Marathon We held a social training run in each of the last two months, for those living in or near the London area. The first was held on a beautiful and fresh sunny morning in early March, doing laps of Regent’s Park & Primrose hill, to help prepare for the inclines of Uganda. The group managed to complete enough laps to cover a 10K distance, so a big well done to everyone involved – you certainly earned your cake and coffee afterwards! Then, April saw a group of our 2017 Runners take on the Wimbledon Half Marathon – a hilly two lap course, which once again was great prep for running in Uganda. Thank you to everyone who came, and a special shout-out to runner Chloe, who only went and won the female event! Congratulations!! Both session made for a brilliant way to kick off the day, and also a great opportunity for some of our runners to meet each other, prior to traveling to Uganda. Photo...
