Interview with two UGM Runners – Philippa Merricks & Steven Wynne

The runners make the Uganda Marathon what it is. The friendships, the community, the fundraising and the determination to finish is why the UGM is truly a Race Like No Other. Here we tell the stories of the runners who took part in 2016 event, as they share their insights and experiences of the week-long adventure.   Phillipa & Steven were part of the group to join us from the charity Deafway, who entered a team to fundraise for a deaf school based in Uganda. It was their first running experience abroad and together, during our half marathon event, they shared a very, very special life-changing moment…   1. What made you sign up for the Uganda Marathon 2016? P.M – I signed up for the Uganda Marathon 2016 via Deafway (www.deafway.org.uk) because Deafway and UGM offered us an opportunity to fundraise for St Anthony’s School for the deaf [a project based in Uganda] and the opportunity to spend two days with the deaf pupils at the school. S.W – Just like Philippa explained, the opportunity from Deafway who partnered with UGM, to support a deaf school in Uganda. I wanted to go abroad and support the school, as well as run the UGM. It was my first running experience abroad and a perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.   2. Was it what you expected? P.M – It was beyond what I expected- the camping on top of Masaka, showering outside and many nights relaxing in front of the fire. Also being able to visit the deaf school and meet the pupils who would directly benefit from...

Interview with a UGM Runner- Katie Sloane

The runners make the Uganda Marathon what it is. The friendships, the community, the fundraising and the determination to finish is why the UGM is truly a Race Like No Other. Here we tell the stories of the runners who took part in 2016 event, as they share their insights and experiences of the week-long adventure. Katie travelled from Dubai and came to the event as one of our more experienced runners, having run races all over the world. Our fastest female International Runner for 2016, she talks about the course, Race Day, the morning training runs, volunteering at the projects, making ‘friends for life’, UGM staff, and donating over 50 pairs of running shoes! Here’s her Uganda story…   1.     What made you sign up for the Uganda Marathon 2016? I had desperately wanted to return to Uganda since I was there on my gap year back in 2008, but had always been dissuaded by poor excuses such as: lack of holiday, expense, no one to go with. I adore running, so this seemed like the perfect way to head back to Uganda and get a cheeky marathon in simultaneously. I saw the event advertised in 2015 but unfortunately, it conflicted with my brother’s wedding so I was determined to do it in 2016!   2.    During the week you stayed at our hotel option. How was it? It was awesome! The Hotel Plus crew were an incredible bunch of people and I definitely met people that I will hopefully be friends with for life. People seemed to think that we may have felt isolated there [compared to camp],...
